What will this machine do?
Plastic is put in the top, gets an initial wash, gets chipped into uniform pieces, washed again, and dropped in a
steady drip past an optical sensor which determines if it is a certain type of plastic. If it can be recycled in a
certain way, a puff of air pushes it into another bin. The remaining plastic chips fall past another sensor and air
puffer, which pull out plastic to be recycled using a new process. This repeats until all recycleable plastic is
isolated.
Why was it invented?
Hand sorting plastics in recycling centers is expensive and difficult. It drives up the cost of recycling and makes cities less likely to recycle.
